Musical Theatre in English, Ages 13+

When the emotion becomes to strong to express in mere words, you sing; When it is too strong too express though song, you dance.

Musical Theatre is a 4 month English Language course on acting, singing and dancing in a Musical. The course will end with a performance consisting of fragments from a well-known piece of Musical Theatre.

The staging of the show will be minimalistic, relying predominantly on the expressive means of the performers and foregoing some of the flashiness usually associated with Musical in favor of a more in depth approach to performing and conveying emotion through words, music and dance.

Who is this course for?

Young performers, aged 13 to 19, enrolled in High School at the time of taking the class.

No previous acting or singing experience is required, but previous experience performing in front of an audience will be taken into account.

Good command of the English language is necessary as the class will be taught entirely in English.

The Audition

The audition will take place on the 23rd of February, from 2:30-4:30 PM.

In order to be selected to take part in this course, you will need to prepare an A Capella version of a song of your choice, to present in front of an audience made up of your course teachers and other students. Make sure you choose a song that has meaning to you.

The audition will also consist of a series of Rhythm, Movement and Acting exercises coordinated by class teachers in all of the three sections: Acting, Singing and Dancing.

We’re NOT looking for perfect voices or exprienced actors, what we’re interested in is your personal take on the song and the way in which you convey what it means to you. You’re enrolling in this class to train your voice and your acting, the only thing we want to see in the audition is your personality.

 THE AUDITION IS FREE.

The course

Throughout the course you will be training in the three areas of Musical Performance: Acting, Singing & Voice training, Dance. Treat this course as an introduction to all three of the above.

Acting

As an introduction to Acting, you will be learning:

  • How NOT to act – we do not pretend to be someone else, we merely try to behave as if we ourselves were in out character’s given circumstances, as the text reveals them to us

  • How to analyze a text in order to find out the essentials: Who, What, Where, When and WHY. What is the character’s main Need or Objective? What Problem are they trying to solve? How do her given circumstances influence her Actions?

  • How to use Actions to enhance your acting – what does your character want in each scene and what strategies does she employ to achieve her goals?

… as well as other tricks of the trade to help you act your part believably, both during this class as well as in any other performance context.

Singing & Voice Training

Workshops from this section will teach you the basics of singing and using your voice in performance, such as:

  • How to use breathing to control sound emission

  • How to use words in a song to convey the emotion behind them

  • How to use intonation in both spoken and musical pieces with purpose and intention in order to deliver a more compelling performance

Dance

The Dance section will comprise of workshops where you will be creating and rehearsing the dance routines you’ll be performing in the final production.

The Show

The production to be staged will be selected based on the students’ abilities, the number of cast members as well as students’ preferences.

The show will be presented in front of an audience consisting of friends and family members.

The production itself will be minimalistic, foregoing some of the flashier elements commonly associated with Musicals (elaborate sets and costumes) in favor of a more in depth approach to performing and to conveying thought and emotion through words, song and dance.
